A SWAT team killed a jail inmate who'd taken a woman hostage Saturday inside a suburban Chicago hospital, authorities said.

The inmate then took a female hospital employee hostage in a room near the treatment area, he said.

Gengler said it's common for inmates to be treated at Delnor, since it is near the jail. PHOTOS: GENEVA HOSPITAL STANDOFFWhen the incident started, the hospital's ER was immediately evacuated, a hospital spokeswoman said.

A SWAT team was sent in as negotiators were trying to persuade Salters to give up, said Kane County Sheriff's Office spokesman Patrick Gengler.

The hostage, a nurse, was able to get out of the situation safely, officials said.

Gengler says Salters was being held on charges related to a stolen vehicle. He had been in police custody since April 11.

GENEVA - An officer was shot and a Kane County inmate is dead after a hostage situation Saturday at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva. He couldn't release details about why Salters was hospitalized, citing federal privacy laws, he said.

The standoff had been contained to one section of the emergency room as of late afternoon, when SWAT and crisis negotiation teams were called to the scene.

Lt Gengler said there have been no reports of injuries. The main hospital was put on lockdown and all operations were normal, except no visitors were allowed.

Hospital staff and paramedics have ambulances ready to transport anyone who comes to the hospital requiring emergency attention, according to the city's statement.
