A SC woman is facing a child cruelty charge after hitting her son multiple times because he made a Mother's Day card for his grandmother but not for her.

The mother was identified as 30-year-old Shontrell Murphy.

A Spartanburg Police Department report says Shontrell Murphy is charged with cruelty to children for hitting her son on the head Thursday. She said the woman tore it up and hit the boy repeatedly, according to the report.

When the grandmother was asked why Murphy had struck the child most recently, she reportedly said, "because she could", per WSPA.

The older woman told officers that her daughter, the mother of the crying boy, had slapped him multiple times on the front, side and back of the head, reported Fox 5.

According to the report, the young boy made a card for his grandmother and when Murphy realized it wasn't for her, she ripped it up and began hitting her son.

While she claimed she disciplined her son because of behavioral issues in school, police discovered an alternate reason. An officer says he found hand-written card torn into pieces.

The station reported that Murphy admitted to smacking the child but "does not believe it was in a hard or violent manner". She is being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.

The boy was taken by ambulance to the hospital to be checked out.

Murphy has been arrested and charged with cruelty to children.
