The Scot could never quite get rid of his opponent, a sloppy service game in each of the second and third sets allowing Khachanov to retrieve early breaks.

Twice Khachanov broke the Murray serve; twice Murray responded immediately with a break of his own. Pliskova will play French 28th seed Caroline Garcia for a place in the semifinals.

While three of the winners in women's fourth-round action Monday - No. 2 Karolina Pliskova, No. 3 Simona Halep and No. 5 Elina Svitolina - are highly seeded, none of the eight players left in that field has ever won a Grand Slam tournament.

Nishikori beat Murray in a dramatic five-setter 1-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 a year ago to reach the semifinals at Flushing Meadows.

"I couldn't do anything first set but I tried to play a little more aggressive sometimes", Nishikori said.

Murray accurately summarised his win over the 21-year-old Russian powerhouse as 'probably the best I have played overall here. "Sorry that I don't remember much".

Wawrinka had only a bit more trouble, eliminating the last Frenchman, No. 15 Gael Monfils, 7-5, 7-6 (7), 6-2.

The 2015 champion sealed victory on his third match point with a backhand down the line that the Frenchman could not return.

The Swiss goes on to face Croatian seventh seed Marin Cilic for a spot in the semifinals.

"I lost my mind in the first set", Nishikori said.

World number one Murray, the runner-up in Paris to Novak Djokovic in 2016, brushed aside Karen Khachanov of Russian Federation 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

In the first set, Murray dropped just five points on serve and made only one unforced error.

Svitolina reached the quarterfinals for the second time, ending the dream run of world No. 290 Petra Martic with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win. "I served well and opened up the court", said Halep.

The star of the show in the women's bracket was Halep, as she was far too classy for Navarro over two lopsided sets.

Joining them in the quarters are 2015 French Open champion Stan Wawrinka and 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic. Paris has had some problems in the previous year or two.

For Khachanov, playing on the center court at Roland Garros was a pleasure, but losing the match was always hard to bite.
