You Won't Want to Miss This Week's Unique Strawberry Moon

The "Strawberry Moon" is also known as the "Rose Moon" and is being called a "mini moon" because it will appear as the smallest full moon of the year.

This year's Strawberry Moon is also a minimoon, meaning that the celestial body will look slightly smaller than normal because it will be at its farthest point from Earth.

A variety of other names have also been given to the June full moon such as Honey Moon or Rose Moon. Native Americans gave names to the full moon of each month to keep track the season.

The moon will be at apogee - the farthest from the Earth - and is the opposite of the "super moon" which occurs when the moon is closest to the Earth and appears the largest.

Supermoon: A Full or New Moon that occurs when the center of the Moon is less than 223,694 (360,000 kilometers) from the center of Earth. But not much. Compared to a supermoon (a full moon near perigee) micromoons appear to be about 14 percent smaller. When it reaches its highest point on Friday morning, it will still only be a third of the way up in the sky. The moon's orbit around Earth is not shaped as a flawless circle. At the time, it will be below the horizon for watchers in the continental U.S. The best view of the minimoon, for them, will be either before or after the peak. If you're not an early riser, the second best time to view it is around sunset Thursday, which is at 8:32 pm.

I was ashamed over Miami behaviour: Simona Halep
Svitolina ended the dream run of world number 290 Martic at the French Open. Cilic was leading 6-3, 3-0 on Court Suzanne Lenglen when Anderson quit.

According to EarthSky eagle-eyed moon watchers may notice that it appears a bit fainter than it would normally.

Minimoons are generally slightly less luminous than a regular full moon.

This year, the strawberry moon will also be a minimoon.
