Woman accused of leak ordered to remain jailed pending trial
A Georgia judge on Thursday denied bail to Reality Leigh Winner, the 25-year-old NSA contractor accused of leaking classified documents. "The NSA report, dated May 5, provides details of a 2016 Russian military intelligence cyberattack on a US voting software supplier, though there is no evidence that any votes were affected by the hack", CNN reports.
A grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday in U.S. District Court charging her with a single count of illegally retaining and transmitting national defence information.
Trump, who has repeatedly vowed to crack down on leakers, believes anyone found guilty of unlawfully disclosing government secrets should be punished to the fullest extent of the law, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said at a press briefing ahead of the detention hearing for victor. What am I trying to say? They were also critical of the Obama administration's approach to leaks, including its pursuit of former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. Before she was charged with leaking USA government secrets, Reality Leigh Winner shared sometimes scathing opinions on President Donald Trump and his policies for the whole world to see.
Victor allegedly told her mother that she needed to "go nuclear with the press" if she didn't get bond because that's how Chelsea Manning got out.
Victor has been jailed in neighbouring Lincoln County since her arrest, according to a booking report released by the sheriff. "Everybody in America knows what she looks like at this point".
Though she was active on social media, victor doesn't appear to have discussed her work online.
Winner, shackled at the feet and wearing an orange jumpsuit in court, said little during Thursday's proceeding, except to reply, "not guilty, your honor", when asked for her plea, and to answer "yes" and "no" to procedural questions put to her by the judge.
Former Panama dictator Manuel Noriega dies at 83
He was toppled in a December 1989 United States invasion, the largest such U.S. military operation since the Vietnam war. Amid growing unrest in Panama, the US President George Bush (senior) ordered the invasion of Panama, in December 1989.
Before Winner left the Air Force, prosecutors believe she inserted a thumb drive into a computer containing classified material, the AP reported.
Winner's attorney says she should be released and prosecutors are exaggerating the threat she poses. The NSA report, dated May 5, provides details of a 2016 Russian cyberattack on a USA voting software supplier, though there is no evidence the hack affected any votes. She's never ran away from anything in her life. The Department of Justice said she printed and improperly removed the classified information on May 9 and then mailed it a few days later.
"Because my client is a millennial and she knows how to use technology, that's somehow proof of evil intent", said Titus Nichols, Winner's defense attorney.
An FBI affidavit says victor confessed to copying and mailing the classified report when agents searched her home last Saturday.
Prosecutors successfully argued Thursday that 25-year-old Reality Winner might possess more stolen government secrets and that she might be a flight risk if released on bond.
Authorities are searching a number of electronic devices seized from Winner's home, including two laptops, a tablet and four cellphones - as well as two spiral-bound notebooks. They say they don't know what happened to it or what it might contain.
The government has said that the alleged leaker, who they claimed said she would play the "pretty, white and cute" card during a jailhouse phone call, also admitted to her crime.
