Congressman Ron DeSantis on field when gunman opened fire

Ron DeSantis said he was walking to auto with a colleague and described to Fox News an exchange he had with a man, who was unarmed: "There was a guy that walked up to us that was asking whether it was Republicans or Democrats out there". The gunfire injured House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and three others. DeSantis noted the threats he has received have grown uglier since President Trump took office.

U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-Laurens, says he left softball practice before a fellow congressman and several others were shot, but thinks he may have seen the shooter.

While appearing on "Fox and Friends" Desantis described the odd encounter that occurred minutes before the incident. But when he saw on TV that Scalise and others had been shot, he instantly recalled the odd conversation.

"He had his detail with him, the ones who really saved the day", DeSantis said.

The lawmaker - the only SC member of the team and who left practice early - described in detail how he interacted with the suspect who later died from his wounds after launching a massive display of gunfire.

Another Republican lawmaker left a few minutes before the shooting.

"Based on the question he asked me, I would make that assumption because he asked me if this team was the Republican or Democrat team practicing".

"I'm shaken up", he said.
