Police sources told The Hindu that an SOS was flashed by junior-rung police personnel, informing the senior police officer about the law-and-order situation on the premises of the mosque.

Witnesses said worshippers had spotted the policeman, Mohammed Pandit, at the mosque in plainclothes, taking photographs of people leaving shortly after midnight.
