Syrian Observatory: air strike kills 42 in Islamic State-held town

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Tuesday dozens of people were killed in an air strike believed to have been carried out by the USA -led coalition on an Islamic State prison in the eastern Syrian town of al-Mayadeen.

"The strikes hit a Daesh jail in Mayadeen at dawn on Monday, killing 44 prisoners and 15 terrorists", Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP. "This mission was meticulously planned and executed to reduce the risk of collateral damage and potential harm to non-combatants".

The two groups said the US-led coalition was behind the strike. It added it would assess the Observatory's allegation.

"So, ISIS is forcing civilians to stay in and around such headquarters to cause as many civilian casualties as possible in the strikes", he said.

"The group already knows which areas and buildings are being targeted by the US-led coalition and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)".

Federer lifts ninth Halle Open title
Federer , in contrast, is yet to drop a set, although it has not all been completely plain sailing for the eminent Swiss. Federer's 92nd title moves him to within two of Ivan Lendl for second on the Open Era titles list.

Russian Federation said earlier this month that it had killed about 180 Daesh militants, including two field commanders, in June 6 and 8 air strikes on Deir Ezzor.

It was not clear how they identified the aircraft responsible.

The Deirezzor24 news website said dozens of civilians and Syrian rebel fighters were detained there.

Islamic State is believed to have moved most of its leaders to al-Mayadeen in Syria's Euphrates Valley, south-east of the group's besieged capital Raqqa, two U.S. intelligence officials have said.

Last month's civilian death count of 427 from US-led coalition air strikes is more than double the previous 30-day toll from April.
