Haruo Nakajima, Original 'Godzilla' Actor, Dies at 88

Haruo Nakajima, the suit actor who played Godzilla from 1954's Godzilla to 1972's Godzilla vs. Gigan, has died.

On that note, may Haruo Nakajima, the classic Godzilla suit actor of 24 years, rest in peace following his death at the age of 88.

In an interview last April, the actor explained how the first suit, which weighed around 200lbs, was created from ready-mixed concrete since rubber was in short supply in the aftermath of WWII. Godzilla studio Toho confirmed the news. Haruo Nakajima got the chance to play a monster in 1953 when director Ishiro Honda contacted him and offered a role on "Godzilla, King of the Monsters".

Nakajima would go on to play Godzilla in 12 films, including Godzilla Raids Again, King Kong Vs. Godzilla, Mothra Vs. Godzilla, Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster, Invasion Of The Astro-Monster, Godzilla Vs.

The actor told CNN's Great Big Story previous year that he studied elephants and gorillas to prepare for his role as Godzilla.

He began his career from samurai and war movies, notably "Eagle of the Pacific" and "Seven Samurai".

"It was so heavy and hot, and with the lighting it was hot just to touch it", Nakajima said.

As the main suit actor for Toho Studios, he also played Mothra in 1961 and King Kong in 1967's King Kong Escapes, reported trade publication Variety. "Godzilla is a creature of the Americans", Nakajima said. "It remains in people's memory, and for that I feel really grateful".

Despite the numerous remakes, Nakajima still believed his portrayal of Godzilla was the best.

"Godzilla's breath is nuclear radiation".

There have been more than 30 Godzilla movies in all, a lot of them Japanese-made.
