One witness told local media the situation was "very tense" and that all surrounding shops were being evacuated. Based on the van's zig-zag pattern, it's believed that the driver wanted to cause as much damage as possible and injure or kill as many people as they could. The path is lined with shops and stalls.

According to ABC, one witness to the incident-which authorities said they are indeed treating as a terrorist attack-said the van's driver ran down bystanders for roughly a thousand feet. There were a lot of people, lots of families (at the site).

At least 13 people were killed.

The Barcelona transit system posted a message on its official Twitter account that numerous subway stations are closed, and it urged people near the area to remain in place until further instructions from police.

Islamic State has claimed it carried out the deadly attack in Barcelona, according to the group's Amaq news agency.

There have been multiple attacks this year in London, where a man in a rented SUV plowed into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, killing four people before he ran onto the grounds of Parliament and stabbed an unarmed police officer to death in March.

1 p.m. - Police have reportedly surrounded Luna Istanbul Restaurant in Barcelona where two gunmen have apparently taken hostages following the deadly rampage involving a white van. The Beavers have announced they are safe, although their proximity to the attack was scary.

Media reports now peg the casualties at 13 dead and 20 others injured in the van crash a short while ago.

The BBC reports that the vehicle sped along the pedestrian area, mowing down people and sending others fleeing for cover. The Mossos d'Esquadra force did not indicate if the incident was related to the van attack in the city's Las Ramblas district on Thursday. Spanish police have also been involved in the arrests of more than 200 suspected jihadis since then.

"They first of all said someone had been shot, it calmed down for a moment and then all of a sudden a second wave of people came down the street".

Las Ramblas is a pedestrian mall that stretches about 3/4 of a mile through the city, connecting Placa de Catalunya to the Christopher Columbus Monument at Port Vell on the Mediterranean.

The area around Las Ramblas has been sealed off for blocks in each direction, and tourists and locals were desperately trying to find loved ones, as the mobile phone network in the area struggled to cope.

Police sources told news agency Europa Press that one police officer was hurt by a vehicle at a control point set up in Barcelona, although they could not immediately confirm if the incident was linked to the attack.
