The news was confirmed by city police commissioner.

At around 8:00 in the evening, senior journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead at her residence in Bengaluru's Rajarajeshwari Nagar.

Gauri Lankesh was the editor of a weekly Kannada tabloid "Lankesh Patrika" and a prominent left thinker and critic of Hindutva politics.

The assailants fled on a motorcycle after spraying bullets at Gauri Lankesh on Tuesday night as she was leaving her auto outside her home in the Karnataka state capital.

In November 2016, she was sentenced to six months in jail after a defamation case was filed against her for a report against BJP leader Prahlad Joshi. Lankesh was the daughter of famous poet-turned-journalist P Lankesh, who was a leading figure in journalism in the Karnataka state.

Many media personalities and politicians have expressed shock and grief over Gauri's murder since Tuesday night. They say she minced no words in criticising the establishment for what she saw were its shortcomings.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted: "Saddened at the killing of journalist Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru".

Asked whether the government had at any time offered her security, the chief minister said: "Gauri met me several times but never asked for security". He said the Prime Minister could not react on everything. Following her conviction, she had told Newslaundry in an interview that "Modi Bhakts and the Hindutva Brigade" are "keen to somehow shut me up". The CCTV footage shows the entire incident of how the journalist was followed and shot just outside her house. "But we did not expect this", said KL Ashok, who runs a communal harmony forum and was a close associate of the victim.

Her body was found lying in a pool of blood outside her home.

He said recently Gauri had been instrumental in bringing Naxalites into the mainstream and they had surrendered. "The case should be handed over to CBI", Gauri's brother Indrajit Lankesh said. "Anybody who speaks against the RSS/BJP is attacked & even killed. The government should take immediate measures and nab the killers to prevent further silencing of voices", she said.

Condemning the killing of the journalist, RSS has appealed to the Karnataka government to launch an impartial probe into the matter and bring the criminals to book.
