National Investigation Agency raids house of Hurriyat leader, seizes Rs 2.2 cr

Meanwhile, Chairmen of both the factions of Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Maulvi Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik have made a decision to protest and court arrest at the headquarters of National Investigation Agency (NIA) in New Delhi on Saturday.

At around 8.00 PM, scores of Aga's followers gathered outside his house and at Imambara of Budgam and they held a strong protest against the NIA search operation.

Sources said that NIA sleuths raided the joint residence of JKLF leader Showkat Ahmad Bakhshi and his brother Shakeel Ahmad Bakhshi in Bemina area of Srinagar today. "A posse of policemen raided Abi Guzar office of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) in the heart of Srinagar and arrested Malik to desist him from spearheading the poll boycott campaign", a JKLF spokesman had said.

Prominent among those searched include Hurriyat leaders Ghulam Nabi Sumji and Syed Aga Hassan Budgami, and close aides of Shabbir Shah - Zameer Sheikh and Razzaq Choudhary.

During the searches, FDs worth over Rs 1 crore, and lots of incriminating material, suspect's financial records, property-related documents and electronic devices have been seized. It said that raids were conducted at 9 locations in Kashmir and one each in Jammu and Gurugram. Both area close confidants of Shabir Shah, who is now in Tihar Jail following arrest by Enforcement Directorate on July 25.

Mittal said that no person has been arrested by the NIA in these raids. The raids were also conducted on house of Firdous Iqbal Wani of Illahibagh Buchpora, Srinagar; Sajad Syed Khan of Ummarabad Zainakoote HMT Srinagar.

A team of NIA also raided two residential houses in Kralpora area in Kupwara district.

The NIA is probing the militancy and separatist funding in Jammu and Kashmir and has already arrested nine people including seven separatist leaders, Sikh lawyer from Jammu and a leading businessman in the Valley. He said the offices of the Chartered Accountants of Hawala operator Zahoor Watali and residences of suspect cross-LoC traders were also searched as they were suspected of fuelling secessionist and subversive activities in Kashmir Valley. The house of Salamabad cross-LoC traders Union President, Hilal Ahmad Khan (Turki) was also raided at Natipora, Nowgam. The duo was sent to NIA custody for ten day by NIA court in New Delhi yesterday.

A team of the agency assisted by state police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) carried out a raid at the Badgam residence of Syed Agha Hassan.
