The Eagle Creek Fire on the OR side of the Columbia River Gorge grew to about 33,682 acres after shifting winds pushed fire activity to the east, according to fire managers.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) now classifies the air in Idaho, Montana, Washington and OR as unhealthy, very unhealthy OR hazardous. The 16 square mile fire east of Portland strained hundreds of home eviction.

Northwest interagency Coordination Center's Robin DeMario says each fire is different, depending on the topography, severity, and suppression efforts, but the price tag, so far, is over twice as high as last year's.

Deputies are out in force to deter looting at evacuated homes, questioning people who do not have a reason for being in the wildfire zone, Reese said.

The fire is burning east of Portland, at the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Others have been warned to get ready as flames burn trees and brush in one of the state's biggest tourist attractions. Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), and Kurt Schrader (OR-05) - sent a letter to House leaders Tuesday requesting that emergency funding for wildland fire suppression be included in the Hurricane Harvey emergency supplemental appropriations bill the House will take up later this week.
