The University of Chicago has held onto its No. 3 spot in U.S. News and World Report rankings of national universities, as Northwestern University moved up the list and the University of IL at Champaign-Urbana fell.

Among all universities on the Best Regional Universities-South list, UNG ranked 61st, up from 72nd the previous year.

Factors for the rankings include graduation and retention rates, surveys of college officials and high school counselors, faculty funding, and selectivity in admissions.

"As a recent article in Politico pointed out, US News and World Report rankings tend to give a higher score to universities that favor wealthy students", said Michigan Tech President Glenn Mroz.

Furman also was listed in "A+ Schools for B Students" and the list of colleges that "Focus on Student Success" in the category of undergraduate research/creative projects. Tulane University (private) also earned a Tier One National University ranking.

Regional colleges focus nearly entirely on a student's undergraduate experience and offer a broad range of programs in the liberal arts, as well as fields such as business, nursing and education. Among top public universities, UC is now ranked No. 63. That represents a two-spot climb for RU.

Western Illinois University provides a variety of outstanding undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including 12 renowned signature academic programs in high demand fields such as accountancy, nursing, engineering, agriculture, law enforcement and more, select doctoral programs and a distinguished Honors College. In 2015, the college ranked No. 61.

The U.S. News rankings consider institutions' performance on up to 15 measures of academic quality, as well as on how they are perceived by their peers.

Among the Best Regional Universities in the South rankings, five private Christian colleges in SC were ranked including Columbia International University, BJU, Anderson University, North Greenville University and Charleston Southern University. The six-year graduation rate for baccalaureate students is 67 percent. The university was No. 3 in the nation for graduating Pell Grant recipients at higher-than-predicted rates, and No. 10 in the nation by the same measure for first-generation students.
