North Korea threatened Thursday to use nuclear weapons to "sink" Japan and turn the United States into "ashes and darkness", in reaction to the new U.N. sanctions imposed over its nuclear and missile programs.

"The four islands of the archipelago should be sunken into the sea by the nuclear bomb of Juche".

The 38 North website in the United States, which keeps satellite watch on North Korea, raised its estimate for the yield from the explosion to around 250 kilotons - more than 16 times the size of the device that devastated Hiroshima in 1945.

In response, the committee said the USA should be "beaten to death like a rabid dog" for the "heinous sanctions resolution".

Yoshihide Suga, Japan's top government spokesman, told reporters in Tokyo on Thursday that North Korea's latest threat was an abominable provocation.

Earlier this month, South Korea's defense minister suggested it was worth reviewing the redeployment of US tactical nuclear weapons on the peninsula in order to deter threats from the North, something conservative US Sen. Leader Kim Jong Un had also threatened to launch missiles over Japan into the Pacific and toward the USA territory of Guam.

"Japan is no longer needed to exist near us", said the Korea Asia-Pacific Peace Committee, which is North Korea's official propaganda arm.

According to 38 North, satellite images suggested the nuke test resulted in landslides occurring at the Punggye-ri test site.
