Multiple injuries have been reported and a suspect is in custody after a shooting at Freeman High School in Rockford, south of Spokane, according to the Spokesman-Review.

He says he saw the student at school with a duffel bag. He proceeded to take his weapons out. After shots were fired, students went running and screaming down the hallways, the teen said. The student who was killed in the shooting engaged with the suspect, Knezovick said, speculating that the deceased victim had tried to talk the suspect out of it. School has been canceled for Thursday, Knezovick said. They were in stable condition and surrounded by family, she said. It is located in the Freeman School District, in a small suburb of Spokane.

Freeman Middle School and Freeman Elementary school, both located in Spokane County, had also been placed on lockdown, the sheriff's office wrote on Twitter.

The identity of the suspect has not been released.

A large contingent of police and firefighters responded to a call to their emergency line, and anxious parents began arriving at the school. The two-lane road into town was clogged as people sped to the school.

"This morning's shooting at Freeman High School is heartbreaking", Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement.

"I don't think anyone can make any sense out of this", said Sheriff Knezovich.

Another junior, William Solsom, said, "You wouldn't really expect something to happen at a school like this".

Ambulances and a Lifeflight helicopter were sent to the school, which was put under lockdown alongside an adjacent grade school and center school. "I've never heard him like that", Moser told the Spokesman Review of Spokane. This is the first school shooting in the USA since May, during the murder-suicide at North Lake College in Irving, Texas.
