One Dead, Several Wounded in Tennessee Church Attack

A gunman opened fire at a church in Antioch on September 24, 2017, killing one person and injuring eight others, including himself.

A dispatcher quoted by the newspaper said that the scene was still "active" at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ as of 11:40 a.m. Sunday.

"This is a mass casualty situation".

Police have not released the name of the shooter, who was among the wounded being treated at the hospital. "The majority are older adults". None of their identities were immediately known.

Aaron said he was "not aware" of any relationship between the alleged gunman and any of the worshippers inside the church. They called 911 and went back over to the scene, where he said members were still panicked and the injured were laid out on the floor.

The shooter was also shot and taken into custody, the fire department wrote on Twitter.

"Every time that church door open. that young woman was there", said Love, who is not a parishioner.

This story is developing. When he did, and the gunman saw him, he shot himself in the head.

The shooter arrived in the parking lot and first fatally fired at a woman walking to her vehicle, Aaron said.

The area around the church, located on Pin Hook Road, has been closed down while police investigate and emergency responders tend to victims.
