"I am done with politics", Kelly told the in-studio crowd during the third hour of NBC's daily morning show, which opened with her giving a monologue about why she'd transitioned from cable news to daytime TV.

Kelly, whose chipper demeanor was markedly different from her clipped, serious tone during her Fox News days on "The Kelly File", led things off with a joke on the inaugural episode of "Megyn Kelly Today".

While Kelly comes from a hard news background from her time at Fox News, the tone of her new show, at least early on, feels similar to the light, upbeat vibe of the hour she replaced with elements of "Ellen" and "Live with Kelly and Ryan" thrown in.

The segment with Liette was branded as a "Settle for More" story, the same name as Kelly's memoir released in November that detailed her upbringing and some of her time at Fox News, including an unwanted sexual advance from former Fox News chairman Roger Ailes (who denied the claims).

"You know why", she said.

Megyn Kelly is over politics.

"I don't know about the lawyer thing, but I think the "Will & Grace" thing and the gay thing are going to work out great", Kelly said, patting him on the shoulder. Then she said she wanted the show to be apolitical and for the show to be a place where viewers can be gifted with "a smile, sometimes a tear, and maybe some hope to start your day".

During a segment with the cast of Will & Grace - including Debra Messing, Will McCormack, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullally - Kelly invited a superfan of the groundbreaking comedy named Russel Turner to meet his television idols.
