The latest free perk on USA airlines: Mobile messaging

"Starting this weekend, any flight you're on Delta, anywhere in the world you'll have the ability to text for free", Bastian told CBS.

The CEO made the announcement on Wednesday morning, saying flyers can use the Gogo App on their WiFi-enabled planes. The airline didn't specifically mention it would support standard text messages - also known as SMS messages - which means customers will need to use one of the aforementioned platforms. Passengers expect the kind of connection speeds they get on the ground, even while flying across continents.

Delta Air Lines announced it will become the first global carrier in the United States to offer free mobile messaging. JetBlue Airways offers free in-flight Wi-Fi to its customers and Alaska Airlines has offered free text messaging on certain planes since January, USA Today reports. Passengers will be able to exchange real time messages in flight with friends, families, colleagues, and clients via iMessage, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

Delta is offering passengers a way to stay connected on flights - without having to pay for Wi-Fi access.
