The White House probe could take weeks or months to complete, as investigators are looking at all emails sent or received. Or allow whoever was spying to take photos and video or transfer vast amounts of data, as a former senior USA intelligence official familiar with the briefings told Politico they were warned could happen. Fewer than a hundred emails from January through August were either sent to or returned by Mr. Kushner to colleagues in the White House from his personal email account.

A White House official reacted to the Journal's story by telling the newspaper that McGahn "did not consider resigning, and he was not concerned about any one individual".

The chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Republican Trey Gowdy of SC, and the senior Democrat on the panel, Elijah Cummings of Maryland, this week sent a letter to the Trump White House and 24 federal agencies asking for names of any "non-career officials" who have used private email accounts or set up alias accounts to conduct government business.

One administration official told Politico Kushner and others appreciate being able to focus on their own work and sit out meetings outside their interests.

Kushner, a senior adviser, works on issues regarding China, Syria, Middle East peace, Afghanistan, innovation, infrastructure and other issues. In secure areas, these techniques could be used by foreign adversaries to steal sensitive government secrets.

The New York Times reported Monday that at least six senior officials, including former Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and former chief White House strategist Steve Bannon, also occasionally used private email accounts, sometimes on commercially available services such as Gmail.

Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Sen. Vice President Mike Pence used a personal email account as Governor and was hacked (something Republicans can't say about Hillary Clinton's personal email account).

The House and Senate Intelligence Committees have previously sought all relevant records from Kushner related to the probe.

Politico said the probe began this week after it reported private email use by Kushner.
