The City of Detroit Fire Department will host its annual Fire Prevention Week from October 8-14.

"This year's theme is every second counts, plan two ways out, which emphasizes the key things your family can do to stay safe", said Cambridge fire department's public educator, Dana Landsborough.

Among the lessons for children and their families is to have a working smoke detector and escape plans that have at least two ways out, Matthews said.

Close doors when leaving to slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire.

In support of Fire Prevention Week, the Summit Fire Department encourages Summit residents to develop a plan and practice it.

FFD also wants you to remember smoke alarms should be tested monthly, and that batteries should be replaced every six months. It will serve to house the bulk of the fire department's fleet and vehicles and will house the everyday administrative operation of the department along with a firefighter crew.

This is the 10th year of the parade, which kicks off Fire Prevention Week. "So our firefighters will go out and inspect the site, let you know about the burn policies and procedures".

Today the Crooksville Fire Department held an open house for the community to learn about fire safety.

"If you have a wood burning appliance, we want to make sure that that is cleaned and inspected every year before the heating and cooling season happens", says Capt. Thomson. Practice using different ways out and show children how to escape on their own, in case adults can't help them.

"Home escape planning is one of the most basic but critical elements of home fire safety", explains Summit Fire Chief Eric Evers. "And if you have to escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to the way out".
