At least six wildfires, some out of control, engulfed the region in thick, billowing smoke that drifted into San Francisco and Oakland and prompted California Governor Jerry Brown to declare a state of emergency for Napa, Sonoma and Yuba counties.

She caravanned with neighbors through flames before dawn as one of the wildfires reached the vineyards and ridges near her home.

Terri Ruttledge, who lives on Adobe Canyon in Kenwood, just made it out before the fire burned her house.

No fires were reported in the Petaluma area early Monday morning, though smoke could be seen over the city. Another hospital in the area, Sutter Hospital, was also placed under evacuation orders.

The Sonoma County Emergency Operations Center was opened just after midnight Monday to respond to the numerous fires.

The fire has crossed Highway 101 in Santa Rosa and ignited structures west of the freeway in the area of Kohl's Department Store on Hopper Avenue. The Redwood Complex Fire injured one person in Mendocino County.

"The Fountaingrove Inn across the street from the mobile home park burned, as did the Hilton Sonoma Wine Country, a Kmart store, a McDonald's, an Arby's, an Applebee's and a Mountain Mike's Pizza".

Another fire burning west of Napa, the Patrick Fire, off of Patrick Road, has consumed at least 3,000 acres.

A red-flag warning is in effect for the North Bay and East Bay hills, meaning there is an elevated risk for fire danger because of dry conditions and gusty winds.

Patients at a healing center in Sonoma County must be cleared as the blasts seethed on. Evacuations were also issued for surrounding counties that are under threat, according to the Napa Valley Sheriff's Office. Further injuries have been reported and others are said to be missing.

The Atlas Peak fire as of about 9:30 a.m. was running toward the Napa-Solano County line, Napa County Fire Chief Barry Biermann said.

The fires have been burning in northern Sonoma County since early Monday morning.

The rapidly moving Atlas Peak fire was visible throughout Napa Valley, heavy smoke was draping over the region.

Mass evacuations are also taking place in Sonoma County, according to the county sheriff's department, where flames from the Tubbs Fire have inundated Santa Rosa, Larkfield and Forestville.

Emergency dispatchers were overwhelmed with 911 calls and advised callers to only call if actual flames were spotted.
