In the category of infections for the fall 2017 report, Beaufort Memorial Hospital scored as well as the best hospitals in the country all five areas surveyed, which was one more category than the spring report. Its hospitals didn't fare well in their first report, with just one out of 44-Howard County General Hospital in Columbia-earning an "A" grade, the fourth lowest percentage in the country behind North Dakota, Washington D.C., and DE and just ahead of NY.

The safety grades are released twice a year and assign letter grades from "A" to "F" to hospitals across the country.

SC ranked 13 among the 50 states, based on the number of hospitals that earned an "A" compared to the total number of hospitals in the state.
