"The defeat of Daesh today is the harshest and most important defeat since the start of the confrontation, as Daesh has actually ended in Iraq after being defeated in the most important point (al-Qaim) that Daesh originally spread from towards the northern and western cities like Mosul and Ramadi in the summer of 2014", Muhandis said.

All the players in the multilayered war covet influence there, and several forces are converging: the alliance that supports the Syrian government; the rival American-backed group known as the Syrian Democratic Forces; and Iraqi forces, who are pursuing Islamic State holdouts on their side of the border.

Iraqi forces on Friday entered Al-Qaim, the main town in ISIS' last bastion in the country, military commanders said.

Syrian state media say the army has liberated the eastern city of Deir Ezzor from the Islamic State group.

The terrorist group had for years besieged a government enclave in Deir al-Zor until an army advance relieved it in early September, starting a battle for jihadist-held parts of the city.

Haider al-Abadi congratulated the army on Friday for seizing the district in such a short time, Efe news reported.

Catalan jailings are a serious mistake, says Puigdemont
Earlier, Spanish justice has summoned a number of former Catalan ministers and lawmakers to appear for questioning this week. Puigdemont said he went to Belgium to garner support from the European Union - not because he's seeking political asylum.

The Syrian Democratic Forces, an alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias, is also battling Islamic State in eastern Syria with US -led air strikes and special forces.

He estimated there were 1,500-2,500 fighters left in al-Qaim and 2,000-3,000 in Albu Kamal.

"We do expect them now to try to flee, but we are cognisant of that and will do all we can to annihilate IS leaders", coalition spokesman Ryan Dillon said, using an alternative acronym for ISIS.

Iraqi forces have taken Al-Qaim, one of the last remaining IS stronghold in the country.

Later, the troops will continue to clear the vast rural areas and desert in north of the Euphrates River.
