Michigan State upsets Penn State after lengthy delay

That doesn't exactly lend to any sort of bragging rights among such a crowded - and high-ranked - conference, but with four games left (and Ohio State still having to face bitter rival MI at the end of November) the Nittany Lions could find themselves still in the title game discussion.

Weather delays have turned the Penn State-Michigan State game into an all-day event.

It was the second straight week sophomore quarterback Brian Lewerke threw for 400 yards or more, finishing the day 33-for-56 as a passer and tossing a pair of touchdowns in the win.

Penn State's Trace McSorley was 26-for-47 passing for 381 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. When the game was resumed at 4:38 p.m., the rain continued and the field was and remains sloppy.

Barkley rushed for zero yards on six attempts in the first half, and for maybe the first time all season was held at bay on kick returns and in the passing attack. The Nittany Lions outscored their opponents 104-3 in the first quarter through the first eight games of the season.

The Spartans tied the game up at 14 before halftime and took a 17-14 lead midway through the third.

Dowell came up with his second interception of the game and third overall for the Spartans, but Penn State responded by picking off Lewerke for the first time. The Spartans took over and then mounted the game-winning drive. But Penn State, coming off a heartbreaking one-point loss at Ohio State last week, responded with 10 points in a span of just over two minutes.

A Lansing State Journal reporter who was at the game said officials told fans to leave the stadium, but said there was no word on whether fans will be allowed to re-enter the football arena when the storm passes.
