Chanting "Death to America" and burning the USA flag, thousands of Iranians protested in Tehran Saturday against President Donald Trump's policies and to mark the anniversary of the 1979 U.S. embassy siege.

A surface-to-surface missile was on full display as thousands gathered at the former U.S. compound, the first time such weaponry has been on display during the annual event.

A crowd chanted "Death to Israel" and "Down with the U.S." during the celebration. It appeared to be an effort by Iranian authorities to contrast its missile programme against those of countries like North Korea, which now uses its arsenal to threaten the United States. State TV said similar celebrations were being held in other Iranian cities and towns.

Trump's administration has taken a tougher line with Iran, threatening to tear up an worldwide accord on its nuclear programme.

During a rally on Saturday, Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, criticized U.S. President Donald Trump, who has refused to re-certify the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Mr Shamkhani, alluding to Mr Trump's threats against North Korea, said even USA allies know that Mr Trump "has no power to realise his bluffs, against Iran, too". The U.S. cut its diplomatic relations with Iran after the embassy takeover and has had no diplomatic relations since. He called the USA the "eternal enemy" of Iran.
