The instant fallout followed a Washington Post report in which an Alabama woman said that Moore, then a 32-year-old assistant district attorney, had sexual contact with her when she was 14. None of the women say that Moore forced them into any sort of relationship or sexual contact.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that if the allegation is true, Moore "must step aside".

In his almost three decades of public service, Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore has styled himself as one of the most religiously righteous politicians of the modern era.

Republican candidate Roy Moore greets supporters at the RSA Activity center in Montgomery, Alabama, US, September 26, 2017. Marion County GOP Chairman David Hall dismissed the accusations, telling Dale that the story told by the woman who was 14 at the time was irrelevant because "she's not saying that anything happened other than they kissed".

Wendy Miller told The Washington Post that "she was 14 and working as a Santa's helper at the Gadsden Mall when Moore first approached her, and 16 when he asked her on dates, which her mother forbade".

The other way Moore could abdicate the ballot is through some form of legal action, but, since the current situation is unprecedented in Alabama politics, no one knows how that would work.

Mr. Moore's candidacy had already anxious party leaders who had embraced the controversial former state Supreme Court justice despite his long record of incendiary comments about gays, Muslims and African-Americans, to protect the Senate seat once held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Borden also signed an affidavit alleging while she was sitting outside his office, she heard Moore refer to gay people in a derogatory manner.

Spielberg, Fuller, Amblin's Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey and "Bones" creator Hart Hanson are exec producers. Michael Ellenberg, the former head of drama at HBO, will also be an executive producer.

Moore blasted the charges as a 'desperate political attack'.

"I wanted it over with - I wanted out", she told the newspaper. Corfman says she voted for Republicans over the past three presidential elections, including for President Donald Trump. Corfman says he asked for the girl's phone number and days later picked her up and brought him to his home where he kissed her. He defeated Luther Strange in September to earn the GOP nomination, and will face Democrat Doug Jones in the general election on December 12. "Whatever this is, just get it over".

Moore became a national figure in the early 2000s when he lost his position as Alabama Chief Justice after refusing a court order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from outside the courthouse.

He added, "My point is The Washington Post successfully put out a narrative out, at least on MSNBC and other places there's a pattern of teenagers".

On a second visit, Moore is alleged to have removed his clothes, touched the teen over her bra and underwear, and guided her hand to touch him over his underwear.

Despite the campaign's clear denial of the allegations, several politicians have come forward calling for Moore to step down.

In a statement, the Moore campaign claimed that the Washington Post - which reported the woman's accusation - had waged "systematic campaign to distort the truth" and that "this garbage is the very definition of fake news and intentional defamation". Corfman never filed a police report or a civil suit, the Post said.
