US Navy to run rare 3-carrier military exercise in Pacific

The three carriers - USS Ronald Reagan, USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt - plan to stage "coordinated operations" in worldwide waters from Saturday till next Tuesday, according to the 7th Fleet.

An official from the South Korean military said the strike groups were planning to hold joint military exercises with Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force on Saturday and Sunday, after which they will train with the South Korean Navy on Monday and Tuesday.

The three carriers involved are the USS Ronald Reagan, the USS Theodore Roosevelt and the USS Nimitz.

The units that have been assigned the strike force will conduct coordinated operations in worldwide waters to demonstrate the United States Navy's unique potential to operate multiple carrier strike groups as a coordinated strike force effort, according to the official website of the Commander, U.S. 7 Fleet.

The strike group will practice everything from air defence drills, sea surveillance and defensive air combat training, to close-in coordinated manoeuvres and replenishments at sea.

It will be the first time three carrier strike groups have operated together in the area since 2007, and comes amid growing tensions on the Korean Peninsula over Pyongyang's nuclear arms and ballistic missile programs. A decade ago, Valiant Shield (VS) 2006 and 2007 had operated together off the coast of Guam, a USA island territory in Micronesia, and focused on the ability to bring together forces from all the three strike groups in response to any regional situation.

DONALD Trump has ordered the "three largest aircraft carriers in the world" to Kim Jong-un's doorstep in the biggest Western Pacific strike force drill for a decade.

Kim was said to have examined it for a "long time" and warned the United States to cease its reckless actions, unless it wanted the North to follow through.

During his recent visit to Seoul, Trump said, " North Korea is not the paradise your grandfather envisioned.

President Trump stood on the floor of the Unite Nations General Assembly several weeks ago and threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea, repeatedly insinuating the only way to deal with North Korea is through military force.

Their presence is a formidable show of force against North Korea.

The regime added that Trump's very visit to South Korea was meant to "light the fuse for a nuclear war".
