Police have 'subject in custody' following stabbings at Mall of America

Police described it as an "interrupted theft".

The incident reportedly occurred in the men's department of Macy's shortly after 6.45pm local time in Bloomington, Minnesota.

When another man intervened to help the first victim, he too was stabbed. Police say one victim was stabbed after they confronted a man who was trying to steal their belongings.

"Our officers arrived and took the suspect into custody", Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts said, while addressing the media.

Police identified the suspect as 20-year-old Mahad Abdiaziz Abdirahaman of Minneapolis, CBS Minnesota reports. Abdiraham was able to stab both shoppers before he was subdued by other people in the store, authorities said. Meanwhile, the suspect is also believed to have been wounded. One man was taken into custody.

"We saw the man walking through before, talking to himself, really really loudly talking to himself", she said.

"Just lived through the scariest experience of my life", wrote Jolene Situma.

Some shoppers tweeted about the incident, saying they hid underneath clothing racks and other places. "He got me!'. I knew something was not right", Situma wrote.
