At least five people are dead after a gunman opened fire at seven locations in a rural Californian town - including at a primary school.

Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston says one child was shot at a school Tuesday and another was shot while riding in a pickup truck with a woman who was also wounded.

The suspected shooter was shot and killed by law enforcement, officials confirmed. Johnston said the school had been cleared by 10 a.m. but he did not have any information about the victims there.

Johnston later said authorities had recovered a semiautomatic rifle and two handguns believed to be used by the shooter.

"I know that we have medevaced a number of students", Johnston said. "This guy has been insane, and he's been threatening us and everything". Jeanine Quist, an administrative assistant with the Corning Union Elementary School District, said no one was killed at the school, but that a "number" of students were shot and wounded. There are over 100 law enforcement officers at the school with up to five crime scenes.

Enloe Medical Center said it had four patients from the shooting - one adult and three children.
