Tesla reveals electric lorry to revolutionise haulage

Demand for electric trucks is expected to grow over the next decade as the U.S., Europe and China all tighten their emissions regulations. The power of the Semi also allows it to go 65mph (104kph) up 5% grades thanks to its four independent motors on rear axles.

Leading up to the event, there was speculation that Tesla might deal with the range problem by devising some kind of battery swapping service at truck stops, but there was no mention of this on Thursday. It's unlike anything you will see in a similar segment, and Tesla gets complete points for standing out in design.

The Tesla Semi won't go into production until 2019, but Tesla founder Elon Musk said the lorry will be cheaper to run than a diesel alternative and will travel up to 500 miles at maximum weight at motorway speeds.

It will be able to go from 0-60mph in 20 seconds when pulling 80,000lbs, the maximum weight allowed on United States roads. Falling battery costs also will help make electric trucks more appealing compared to diesels. The truck can be charged via the superchargers within in 30 minutes, which is the time you would need to load and un-load the material.

Mr Osborne said Tesla's cumulative capex announcements now exceed $15 billion to $20 billion over the next few years.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the all-electric truck at an airport hangar near Los Angeles. They can also be charged overnight. There are a host of touchscreen systems as well on either side of the driver and offer everything from navigation, blind spot monitoring to trip data logging.

Musk said that the age of traditional gas-guzzling cars was over.

This is a sign of how the Tesla Semi could make a bigger impact than many might suspect on the trucking industry. There is reinforced windshield glass that shouldn't chip or crack.

Safety features will include standard automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, and forward collision warning, while Tesla Armor Glass prevents glass from breaking versus standard truck glass, ensuring drivers can stay on the road for longer.

Tesla claims the electric costs of the Semi are half that of a traditional diesel semi truck, thanks to fewer systems to maintain (no transmission or brake pads to name a few), providing a number of over $200,000 Dollars in fuel savings, and a two-year payback period. Tesla is working on a pickup truck and a lower-cost SUV and negotiating a new factory in China.
