Extending its rally, the 30-share index advanced 101.78 points, or 0.30 per cent, to 33,689.86.

FMCG stock Hindustan Unilever will be in focus as the company is set to reduce prices by 7-10 percent on an average across products such as detergents, cosmetics, deodorants and packaged foods following the reduction in GST from 28 percent to 18 percent.

The 30-share Sensex had earlier slipped to a low of 33,468.30, but some last-minute buying helped the index wipe- off losses and closed up 26.53 points, or 0.08 per cent, at 33,588.08.

The broader markets outperformed continued their winning momentum as the Nifty Small Cap index and the Midcap index rose by 0.29 per cent and 0.85 per cent, respectively.

Major index gainers were Aurobindo Pharma, IndusInd Bank, Infosys, GAIL, Bharti InfraTel, Ultratech Cement and Powergrid.
