SCO Summit: Sushma Swaraj attends dinner hosted by Russian PM

Speaking at the 16th meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization's (SCO) Council of the Heads of Government (CHG), Abbasi called for the further deepening of cooperation within the new consultative format of SCO Afghanistan contact group.

Reciprocating the offer with warmth, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan said that Pakistan looks forward to harbouring a favourable cooperation in future exchanges and trade with China in various fields.

Prime Minister Abbasi would participate in the SCO retreat being hosted by the Russian prime minister along with other SCO counterparts.

At the plenary, the prime minister would outline Pakistan's commitment to SCO's objectives, including fighting terrorism/extremism and its honest interest in ensuring regional peace, stability and development.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev will lead Russia's delegation at the Sochi SCO meetings.

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev made an announcement in this regard after signing of documents by the founding members - including Russia's Vladimir Putin and China's Xi Jinping - at the conclusion of 17th SCO summit. India's membership was strongly pushed by Russian Federation, while Pakistan's entry into the grouping was backed by China.

This is the first SCO Heads of Government meeting that Pakistan would participate in after assumption of full membership in June this year.

Pakistan has been an observer with the SCO since 2005 and applied for its full membership in 2010.

Keeping in perspective the objectives of SCO of building a strong security architecture in the region, EAM Swaraj underscored India's determination to consistently strengthen cooperation within the SCO framework and to work together to seek comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security. But there are still no plans to have a bilateral meeting with Pakistani leaders.
