A joint statement issued after the meeting said the ministers also deliberated on trilateral pact relating to the mega connectivity project and expressed satisfaction on the completion of the ratification procedures by Afghanistan and India. India, Iran and Afghanistan have signed MoU's that have committed nearly $21bn to Chabahar-Hajigak Corridor, including $85m for Chabahar port development by India, $150m line of credit by India to Iran.

The port was inaugurated in the presence of representatives from India, Afghanistan and several other countries of the region.

Over a month ago, India sent the first consignment of wheat to Afghanistan through Chabahar Port, which Swaraj remarked as a gift from Indians to Afghans.

India has committed $500mn to the Chabahar port, which it hopes will allow the port to bypass rival Pakistan's, despite its key ally, the United States, taking a tougher approach to Iran.

At a press conference last week, the head of Sistan-Baluchestan's Ports and Maritime Bureau said costs for each 20-foot container were $1,000 lower if transported through Chabahar to Afghanistan compared with the Pakistan route. "It was also made a decision to convene an expert-level meeting of senior officials of the three countries at the earliest", the joint statement said. Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed the Chabahar port development pact to develop connectivity with Afghanistan.

The project was officially opened in a ceremony attended by 60 foreign guests from 17 countries at the port located by the Sea of Oman.

Ahead of the inauguration, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met her Iranian counterpart Zarif in Tehran on Saturday, during a surprise stopover on her way back from a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting in Russian Federation, and discussed the port project among other issues.
