House of Cards' Final Season Moving Forward Without Kevin Spacey

The chief content officer for Netflix told the audience at UBS's Global Media and Communications Conference in NY on Monday that season 6 of the streaming giant's landmark show will happen.

The final season will consist of eight episodes, instead of the typical 13 episodes that seasons one through five consisted of.

"We're really excited about bringing some closure to the show for fans", said Sarandos, speaking Monday at UBS's Global Media and Communications Conference in NY.

Robin Wright, who has starred alongside Spacey since the beginning of the series, playing wife Claire to his Frank Underwood, seemed the frontrunner to be shifted to lead, particularly after having ended the last season as the reigning president. On Monday, Anthony Rapp tweeted about the news that Spacey's show "House of Cards" would be resuming production. In the Michael Dobbs book that inspired the Netflix series, Frank's character dies. Netflix announced in November that the sixth season of House of Cards would be its last. "We're excited for the 370 people who make "House of Cards" and have done the best work of their lives on that show; for the 2,000 people in Baltimore who have come to depend on that show for their jobs".

On Nov. 26, Media Rights Capital announced that it had extended its production hiatus for another two weeks until December 8.

House of Cards was among Netflix's first original series to become a breakout hit, earning a large following of fans along with critical acclaim after the first season of the David Fincher-produced political thriller debuted in 2013.

A source familiar with the decision told CNN Monday that Netflix had chose to restart production without Spacey.
