Rep. John Conyers Announces He's Retiring Today

Democratic Rep. John Conyers will reportedly not seek re-election after multiple women claimed he sexually harassed them including a former staffer, according to a new report released Tuesday. He said he plans to run for John Conyers' seat in Washington, D.C. "He is going to retire", the younger Conyers said.

"This is about much more than one congressman", Grubbs' attorney, Lisa Bloom, said in an email after Conyers announced his resignation.

Conyers has denied the allegations of sexual misconduct.

"We will discuss in the next day or so what Mr. Conyers plans to do".

"My legacy can't be compromised, or diminished in any way by what we are going through now", Conyers said.

"Oh, absolutely not", Conyers said. This, too, shall pass.

He added, "I want you to know that my legacy will continue through my children".

The Detroit Free Press on Monday reported that Elisa Grubbs, who previously worked for Conyers, said she saw the congressman touched another one of his accusers, Marion Brown, inappropriately and said Conyers also groped her on one occasion in church.

When asked if Congress should disclose the details of settlements made by other lawmakers in cases of sexual misconduct or harassment, Conyers replied with "a strong, unequivocal yes".

He then endorsed his son as his replacement. "When I return to Detroit I look forward to our national media taking a thorough look at all candidates to replace my uncle @RepJohnConyers".

Last week, minority leader Nancy Pelosi said Conyers should step down.

Conyers called in to The Mildred Gaddis Show Tuesday morning from his hospital room with his attorney by his side. He's been re-elected 25 times since and is the longest-serving current member of Congress, and the fourth-longest serving member of the House in history.

The revelations against Conyers came amid a flurry of allegations of sexual misconduct against several of his colleagues in both the House and Senate, including Reps.

In the weeks since Buzzfeed broke the story of Conyers settling "a wrongful dismissal complaint in 2015 with a former employee who alleged she was sacked because she would not "succumb to [his] sexual advances, '"-a story that also revealed fucked up facts about Congress" unfair sexual harassment reporting system, e.g., the victim of harassment has to pay for her own lawyer but tax payers foot the bill for the Congressman-Conyers has faced two more sexual harassment accusations from former staffers".

The first report came out on November 21.

Franken, Farenthold, and Kihuen have all resisted any calls for their resignations.

Conyers is one of four sitting U.S. lawmakers hit by allegations of sexual misconduct in the wake of the claims targeting movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, which triggered a torrent of accusations against powerful figures in the worlds of entertainment, media and politics.
