Tennessee Nearing Deal to Make Alabama DC Jeremy Pruitt Next Head Coach

Pruitt, who has never been a head coach before, interviewed with new Tennessee athletics director Phillip Fulmer twice this week and quickly emerged as a favorite once Fulmer took control of the coaching search.

The 43-year old Pruitt has been the Tide's defensive coordinator the past two seasons.

ESPN is reporting that Pruitt will be allowed to stay at Alabama to coach in the National Championship Playoff while he recruits for Tennessee and assembles his assistant coaches.

Fulmer then reportedly moved on to hiring Pruitt. This year, Alabama leads the nation in scoring defense and yards per play. "Now I'm not sure that he can go in and steal Alabama commits this year, especially given the short window of time, but the future is bright from a recruiting standpoint".

According to Football Scoop, Pruitt has had discussions with former Vol and current Colorado State cornerbacks coach Terry Fair about joining his staff at Tennessee.

That dealt a serious blow to his already fragile alliance with rebel chief Abdul Malik al-Huthi. On Saturday, Saleh appeared to change sides once more.

Pruitt inherits a Tennessee program that is seeking to return to the prominence it enjoyed in the 1990s and early 2000s under Fulmer.

No. 4 Alabama plays No. 1 Clemson in the Sugar Bowl on January 1 as part of the College Football Playoff. However, the search for a new coach had been so unsuccessful that it was even jokingly rumored North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un even turned down the job. The Tide are the fourth seed this year.

There is one coach that thinks Pruitt is the right man for the job: his former boss, Nick Saban.

No college team Pruitt has coached for has had a losing record.
