Winter storm watch issued for Jefferson, Lewis counties

A weak cold front is giving us mostly cloudy skies with scattered afternoon snow showers.

Tuesday morning. Light snow will fade away this morning as the clipper system moves through.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for parts of central Wisconsin including Marathon, Wood and Portage counties.

We will have to deal with an Arctic air mass (temperatures in the teens and low 20s), gusty winds, some accumulating lake snow and blowing and drifting tonight through Wednesday. Heavy snow showers from Lake Michigan are likely to blanket portions of the viewing area through the late evening hours.

"Plan on hard travel conditions, including during the morning commute on Wednesday", the advisory said. Roads will be snow-covered and slippery.

The little bit of snow that coated southern West Virgina Saturday night apparently was just a precursor to the main act that's coming Tuesday.

The heaviest snow is expected between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., which could make a mess of the drive home. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 9 inches, with localized amounts up to 12 inches, are possible. The wind chill may possibly reach minus 3 degrees by evening.

It remains cold and dry on Wednesday. Thanks to Lake Erie, snow could continue into Thursday and Friday.

Metro Detroit is expecting another, even bigger blast of snow - set to strike tomorrow.

The low will continue to push east Thursday, but then lake-effect snow will kick back in.
