Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer identified the deputy as 34-year-old Daniel McCartney, of Yelm.

"He was one of the people in our agency who stepped up and stepped forward", said Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor, according to KOMO.

The Pierce County deputy who was fatally shot near Spanaway on Monday morning was a Navy veteran and a father to three children, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office. Dispatchers heard screaming and a scuffle during the initial 911 call.

Early Monday morning officers and medical staff took part in a procession for McCartney when his body was taken from St. Joseph to the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office. Gunfire broke out about three minutes into the chase leaving McCartney only hours to live, one suspect dead lying next to a handgun and one suspect on the run.

After arriving at the scene, McCartney chased an unidentified black male on foot before the suspect shot him and escaped. The deputy had been transported to a hospital in Tacoma before he died.

One suspected burglar was found dead near the home about 1:30 a.m.

The suspect, who authorities described as armed and risky, was the subject of manhunt by K9 units in the area of 200th Sreet as the suspect is being actively searched for by K9 units.

Bethel School District canceled all classes for Monday out of "an abundance of caution", it reported on its Facebook page. All roads around the area reopened around 6:40 a.m., except for 200th Street East which will remain closed from 42nd Avenue to 50th Avenue while police continue their investigation.
