Ford Announces Diesel Option for F-150

Developed in-house, the new diesel is a 3.0-liter V6, under the same Ford Power Stroke brand name, and engineering team as the potent 6.7-liter V8 available in F-Series Heavy Duty trucks.

"We know that competing diesels with electric cooling fans have to dial back on power under extreme heat and altitude, so we decided on a viscous-controlled mechanical fan that has the capacity to move much more air across the radiator and intercooler in extreme conditions", David Ives, Ford diesel engine technical specialist, said in the announcement.

The engine should appeal to frequent towers and long-haul drivers with improved capacity and range. The same compacted-graphite iron block material and forged steel crank as used in the 2.7-liter EcoBoost has been carried over to the V6 diesel, too.

The first F-150 with a diesel engine is heading to showrooms this spring, and should be the first full-size pickup to crack the 30 mpg barrier when it does. Best of all for those who use their trucks to do characteristically "trucky" things, it delivers up to 440 lb-ft of torque, according to Ford, for a best-in-class tow rating of 11,400 pounds, along with 2,020 pounds of payload capacity. Ford is hoping to gain some customers from rivals Ram and Nissan, which both offer diesels in their full-size trucks.

Ford is already taking deliveries for the 2018 F-150 diesel, which arrives this spring. It costs $4,000 more than a similarly equipped 2.7-liter V-6 Lariat, or $2,400 over a similar 3.5-liter V-6 version.

Cam Newton led the team in rushing for the second time in his seven seasons there with 754 yards and six touchdowns. New Orleans is lead by a two-headed monster at running back between rookie standout Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram .

Adding the diesel option gives F-150 buyers six choices of engine, and the company expects about 5 percent of F-150 buyers will choose diesel.

Ford says dealers will open order books for the diesel toward the middle of this month, but you may want to prepare for some price shock.

Like other truckmakers, Ford will treat the diesel F-150's emissions with AdBlue, or urea-based after-treatment, from a 5.4-gallon tank that will need servicing every 10,000 miles.

Over the decades; the Ford F-150 has had updates, design changes, and the record for best-selling USA vehicle for the last 41 years. The OEM called the 2018 F-150 with this latest engine "the most efficient F-150 towing machine ever".
