Man burns down own apartment trying to kill spider with fire

A do-it-yourself extermination gone off the rails Sunday ended up ousting residents from a California apartment.

No injuries were reported from the blaze.

Lyndsey Wisegarver, who is the care giver for one of the men who lives in the building, said it was a "huge wolf spider".

A man on a mission to kill a large spider has set his home on fire, after trying to hunt the arachnid down with a mini blowtorch.

The fire wasn't enough to completely destroy the apartment, but the extent of the damage has forced the residents to move out.

Sure enough, as the Record Searchlight reports, the seemingly fool proof plan went awry when when the spider, now aflame, ran about the gaff setting the mattress on fire. Wisegarver said the fire also spread to the drapes and a flag collection.

Residents inside the home tried to use a garden hose to put out the flames until fire crews arrived.

Pitt said the fire spread to a closet in the bedroom, but firefighters were able to keep it from getting into the attic or neighboring apartments.

The fire caused about $11,000 in damage.

The Redding Fire Department said that they do not yet have an official designation for what started the fire and will investigate the claim about the spider.

Firefighters could be seen removing wet clothing, as they attempted to mop up after the fire. "We'll make it work", she told the news outlet.
