Ford Edge The Latest To Hop On ST Train

The move toward ST could signal a sea change for Ford Performance.

The ST edition of the Edge sport utility vehicle that Ford introduced Thursday in advance of the Detroit auto show is powered by a 335-horsepower twin-turbo V-6 engine, engineered on the track and styled to look "sinister", said its designer Steve Gilmore. It will bring Ford's SUV lineup up-to-speed with crosstown rivals General Motors Co. and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, which a year ago unveiled performance trims for full-size SUV models.

Ford plans to bring some spice to the crossover segment with the launch of its Edge ST, a performance-oriented version of its five-seat, midsize SUV.

Ford isn't quoting specific performance numbers, but the combo should slightly outperform the Edge Sport, which takes 6.2 seconds to dash up to 60 miles per hour powered by the same 2.7-liter turbo-6 but with 20 fewer hp and 30 fewer lb-ft of torque. The V6 is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive is standard. What's more, the exhaust note will be better, and paddle shifters will add to the drama. But the latest addition to the Ford Performance lineup isn't a Fiesta or a Focus.

Stephanie Brinley, senior analyst at IHS Markit, said the exterior design and technology updates on the Edge are notable and important to consumers. Standard on all Edge models, the feature includes a Wi-Fi hotspot capable of supporting as many as 10 devices, and enables Edge owners to locate, unlock, and remotely start their vehicles.

Mario Tennis Aces smashes on to Nintendo Switch this Spring
This spin-off fighting game includes only the women of the King of Fighters series and features up to two-on-two battles. Another platform for the Nintendo Switch sees you controlling Madeline as she takes on the unsafe Celeste Mountain.

Wheel sizes range from 18 inches on lesser Edges up to optional 21-inch summer tires on the ST.

Those beefed up brakes could come in handy when the ST is dialled up into its new Sport mode, which offers more immediate throttle response. Statistics show that the vast majority of United States auto buyers usually purchase utility vehicles while others preserve their preference for performance. If readily-available, affordable performance vehicles are to survive as a growing number of consumers select crossovers and SUVs over cars, brands like Ford's ST will have to translate to bigger vehicles, and sell in respectable volumes. This direct-injection turbocharged engine gets 250 hp, an increase of 5 hp, and 275 lb-ft of torque.

With a wider grille and freshened fascia that create an athletic, modern appearance, the new Edge maintains the reputation for sophistication it's carried for more than a decade.

Both the new Ford Edge and all-new Edge ST are set to hit showrooms this summer.
