Karni Sena celebrates Congress victory in Rajasthan bypolls

"Public supported our sangharsh (struggle) and voted against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)".

The party, which heads the state government led by Vasundhara Raje, lost the by-elections to both the Lok Sabha seats in Alwar and Ajmer, and the Mandalgarh assembly seat, to a resurgent Congress. However, since the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, where the anti-Congress mood of the nation played the most pivotal role, the subsequent BJP triumphs have been achieved on the strength of the continued negative perception of the Congress, coupled with divisive politics propelled by Hindutva-centric propaganda. "By-polls were called after the death of BJP lawmakers in the three seats".

Will the results trigger a rethink on simultaneous polls?

In Ajmer, the biggest margin in an assembly seat was in Kekri, where the Congress defeated BJP by 34,790 votes.

Ever since the BJP came to power at the Centre, the social fabric of Rajasthan has seen a violent change. Raghu Sharma of the Congress won against BJP's Ram Swaroop Lamba in Ajmer. He had garnered 520,434 votes, leaving behind Jaswant Singh Yadav of the BJP at 375,520 votes. It comes as a shot in the arm for the Congress in general, and Rajasthan Congress chief Sachin Pilot in particular. The party maintains an unassailable lead in Ajmer Lok Sabha constituencies. After Thursday's results, all three will be held by the Congress. BJP's Shakti Singh Hada gets 32,216 votes. On the other hand, BJP State Unit Chief Ashok Parnami said that they accept the mandate.

BJP leaders are keeping a close watch on Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijay Singh's Narmada Yatra.

"The high-handedness and arrogance (of the BJP) have been rejected while people have put their trust in Congress president Rahul Gandhi".

In Ajmer, the sitting MP Sanwar Lal Jat passed away on August 9 a year ago.

The bypoll to the seat was necessitated after BJP MLA Kirti Kumari died of swine flu on August 28 a year ago. Incumbent Trinamool Congress (TMC) won both seats by substantial margins.

The BJP suffered a devastating blow as it faced a complete rout in five byelections held in Rajasthan and West Bengal. Sunil Singh of TMC has got 77983 votes. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate was pushed to the third spot and polled 1,38,792 votes.
