John Mahoney, The Actor Who Performed Frasier's Dad, Has Died Aged 77

John Mahoney, the actor best know for playing Frasier and Niles Crane's father on Frasier, has died aged 77. He then moved to the United States as a young man and served in the US Army for three years.

But it is for his role as loveable curmudgeon Martin Crane in Frasier that he will be best remembered.

Mahoney's rep confirmed his death to ET on Monday, which happened in Chicago on Sunday "after a short illness". He moved to the United States at 19, becoming a US citizen in 1959 and settled in IL under his sister's sponsorship. After briefly working as a teacher, he became editor of a technical publication, The Journal for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals.

First he acted on Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre stage, gaining recognition in the theater world. He only began acting in his late '30s, cutting his teeth at the legendary Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago before appearing in the original production of John Guare's The House of Blue Leaves (for which he won a Tony Award), and co-starring in the 2007 Broadway revival of Prelude to A Kiss, among other roles.
