Ronald Koeman appointed new Netherlands head coach

Former Everton manager Koeman has been out of a job since he was dismissed by the Premier League club back in October.

Having retired from playing in 1997, that was Koeman's first coaching job, assisting head coach Guus Hiddink as the Oranje finished fourth at the World Cup the following year.

Koeman succeeds Dick Advocaat, who failed to guide the Netherlands to the 2018 World Cup after succeeding Danny Blind midway through the qualification campaign.

But he faces a challenge to lift morale in the national side, who failed to reach either Euro 2016 or this summer's World Cup.

"I'm excited and really very proud that I've signed a contract as the national head coach", Koeman said. "I am looking forward to the forthcoming years as national team coach".

Since finishing third at the 2014 World Cup under Louis van Gaal, the Netherlands have endured a rocky few years.

The Netherlands also missed out on UEFA EURO 2016 prior to Russian Federation 2018, so Koeman's task will also be to get the Dutch back to the continental finals, which will be held in 12 cities in 12 different host countries.

The former Everton manager's first opponents will be England in a friendly at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam on 23rd March. We have a lot of good players and talented players.

Koeman's last job as a coach was at Premier League club Everton, where he was sacked on October 23 past year.
