Such strikes reflect the reality that, after the defeat of ISIS, the U.S. has said troops in Syria are there primarily with an eye toward imposing regime change in Syria, and picking fights with the Iranians. The official said they have not ruled out that Iranian backed-forces might have also been involved in the attack.

The U.S. Coalition in the Middle East stated that the Syrian regime's armed forces attacked a headquarters belonging to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) east of the Euphrates River which resulted in a U.S. counter airstrike in self defense.

Officials say the US was in with Russian counterparts during and after the attack and were assured that Russia would not engage coalition forces in the vicinity.

The official added that no USA personnel were killed or wounded in the engagement.

According to another official speaking to CNN, the US-backed Coalition was "in regular communication" with Russian military forces in the area.

The coalition said the attack occurred around 8 kilometres (5 miles) "east of the Euphrates River de-confliction line in Khusham", a town southeast of the provincial capital Deir al-Zor city.
