New York State high school graduation rate rises, officials say

Idaho's 2017 high school graduation rate is unchanged from 2016, according to data released Wednesday by the State Department of Education.

There was no change in the percentage of students who dropped out from 2016 to 2017.

State Superintendent Sherri Ybarra was unavailable for comment Wednesday morning.

"I'm still quite optimistic", said Superintendent Kriner Cash.

"Staying the course is not going to work for Idaho", Dillon said.

"We are concerned that much of the statewide gain appears to be driven by an increase in local diplomas rather than Regents diplomas", Rosenblum said, "and by the declining 4-year graduation rates and increasing dropout rates for English language learners". The commissioner also said the state will require districts to add extra supports for English language learners and better track their dropout rates. "And those who don't graduate will end up having a negative impact on the economy".

The newly-released four-year graduation rates show the state what became of students who began as freshmen in 2013 and whether they graduated with a diploma, earned an equivalency degree or dropped out of school.

Ybarra last responded to Idaho Education News about graduation rates in December.

About 9,900 students graduated through one of the new pathways in 2017, the first year data for the group was made available. These represent some of Idaho's smallest districts, with an average student "cohort" size of 19 students.
