FDA investigates dog food maker for 'pattern of contamination' after multiple deaths

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, along with the Washington Department of Agriculture is investigating what the FDA says is a pattern of Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes contamination in raw pet foods manufactured by a Tukwila, Washington company.

The two reports of human illness resulted from contact with Raws for Paws Ground Turkey Pet Food.

There have been four recalls of and several complaints associated with Arrow Reliance Inc's Darwin's Natural and ZooLogics pet foods, manufactured over the period from 17 October, 2016, to 10 February, 2018. Pets can also become carriers of the bacteria-without getting ill themselves-and infect humans.

Raws for Paws, based in Minneapolis, is recalling about 4,000 pounds of its 5-pound and 1-pound sealed plastic tubes of ground turkey pet food because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The product UPC is #7 85184 25105 8.

Consumers are encouraged to check the lot code to see if their product was affected.

Consumers who had the recalled Darwin's products in their homes should clean their refrigerator and clean and disinfect all bowls, utensils, food prep surfaces, pet bedding, toys, floors, and any other surfaces that the food or pet may have had contact with. 6 animal infestations were confirmed after consuming ZooLogics and Darwin's Natural pet food.

Salmonella infection symptoms in people can include diarrhea that lasts for more than three days, or is accompanied by high fever, blood in the stool, or so much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down and you pass very little urine. Bully Sticks chews for dogs manufactured by Redbarn Pet Products (Long Beach, Calif.) were recalled after a sample tested positive for salmonella.

To prevent the spread of salmonella from pet food to people, the FDA recommends that people wash their hands after handling their pet's food. Veterinarians who wish to have dogs tested for Salmonella may do so through the Vet-LIRN Network if the pet is from a household with a person infected with Salmonella.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. However, signs of infection can include vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, loss of appetite and/or decreased activity level.
