Fellow students at Marcus High School alerted school resource officers to the student with a gun around 11 a.m.

The Plano West arrest stemmed from a campus Crime Stoppers tip, according to Plano police. In a letter released to families, a student reported to school administration of another student stealing a cell phone. The officer then lost sight of the student, whose identity is known, and the school went on lockdown while police searched the building.

The incident underscores the benefits of having the crime stoppers program and the importance of having the resource officers on campus, which puts them in a position to respond quickly, Tilley said. The student was charged with terrorizing and carrying a concealed weapon.

Captain Paul Starks, a police department spokesman, said the gun was in the student's backpack.

"News of a weapon on campus is unsettling for all of us, especially in light of the tragic events from yesterday in Florida", the letter reads.

Plano West's SRO investigated the tip, made contact with the student and discovered a handgun in his possession. We will follow district policies and procedures and take appropriate action to the fullest extent of the law.

District spokeswoman Diana Spencer confirmed the school is on lockdown and that police are on the scene. Police say the student will remain in custody pending charges.

"We received a report there was a weapon in a student's backpack", Shafferman said in a message posted on the school website. We will continue our vigilance in these areas. Working together, we can make a difference.
