Legendary action star Arnold Schwarzenegger has been cast in the Michael Fassbender-fronted feature expansion of popular short film Kung Fury.

Schwarzenegger joins a cast that includes Michael Fassbender, David Hasselhoff and Sandberg who is starring and producing the project under his Laser Unicorns production company, Variety reported.

For the original Kung Fury, Sandberg, a commercial and music video director, used his production expertise to create a VFX-heavy, stunt-laden blast of nostalgia and satire; posted to YouTube after a 2015 Cannes Film Festival presentation, Kung Fury rocketed to double-digit views within the week.

The main line of the plot is set in 1980s Miami, which is kept from harm and prying eyes by Kung Fury and his team, Thundercops, comprising police force gathered across generations to defeat the evil Kung Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler. No word yet on who's directing the sequel, but filming begins this summer in the US and Europe.

Schwarzenegger has been the face of the "Terminator" franchise for years - the fifth installment was released in 2015.
